Learn about our story, workshops & kiln – along with Hugh & Sarah’s unique style and approach to pottery.
Our story
Sarah and Hugh bought a three-acre paddock in Reikorangi in 2017 and started planting orchards and gardens. They moved a hundred-year-old bungalow on-site in 2019, and when Sarah’s pottery had almost entirely taken over the large living area, they built the studio that is at the heart of the potter’s folly.

The potters
Sarah Bromley

- Sarah has exhibited work in group and solo exhibitions at the Ōtaki Pottery Club, and has her work in various shops and cafes in Kapiti as well as selling at the Waikanae Market and the Ōtaki Pottery Club.
- Her passion is the making of beautiful everyday objects for people to take pleasure in and Sarah aims to blend form and colour in each unique piece, so that every cup of tea (or coffee), or bowl of pasta, is transported from mere functionality to a ritual pleasure. She delights in the idiosyncrasies of glaze layering, and the alchemy of creating her own glazes. Sarah enjoys using a variety of techniques (for example, sgraffito, mishima) to give interesting effects, often inspired by the beauty of the surrounding natural world. Sarah is hooked on that sense of magic and wonderment every time she takes work out of the kiln. Some of her favourite pieces are the ‘happy accidents’ that are never planned or expected.
- She is particularly passionate about the wilder side of potting – woodfiring, using hand-dug clays, and creating glazes from local clays, rocks and ash.
- Sarah was part of a team that built a salt and soda brick kiln for the Mirek Smisek kilns at Te Horo Trust in 2023.
- Group Shows: Starglaze 2022, Festival of the Pots 2023
- Solo Exhibition: Otaki Pottery Club, June 2023

Our Kiln
At the potter’s folly we use an electric kiln, and Sarah takes every opportunity to do wood and gas firing. We have plans to build a wood fire kiln on our property.
